Braces 101

Braces 101It a powerful thing, a smile. It will in many occasions make the first impression you give to people a perfect one, even more so when you are confident enough to smile wide with an open mouth of perfectly shaped teeth. Braces have been long enough with us so as to evolve in many different variations, each kind suitable for a different purpose and all with one common goal , to give you that braces smile that only comes after you show some discipline and wear your metal, ceramic or invisalign braces for the exact period that your orthodontist recommends.

Braces can be divided in three most commonly used types, following are some of the points you need to know about three of the most popular ones.

  1. Metal braces.
They have been around for the longest and one of their most appealing points is their price which makes them more affordable than other solutions. Also, they are made of stainless and are more durable than other options. From an esthetic point of view they may not be the best solution since even though they are now a lot smaller and more attractive looking then some years ago, they are still highly visible with their stainless steel wires placed on the front parts of your teeth. One other drawback of this solution is that you`ll have to be pretty disciplined about your food (hard foods such as chips, peanuts and the likes can seriously harm your braces and make them nearly impossible to clean).
  2. Ceramic braces.
Opposite to their metal counterparts, the ceramic braces are more popular because of their esthetic appeal. They are less visible and blend with the teeth in a more natural manner. Their major weakness is their fragility as a result of the material they are made of, this also increases maintenance and replacement costs, driving the overall costs a bit higher than the more traditional choice of metal braces. You will also have to be very careful with foods and drinks that naturally stain your teeth because they will also stain your ceramic braces.
  3. Invisalign braces.
These braces are meant for people with minor dental problems which are not of a complicated nature. The method uses a series of nearly invisible teeth aligners which apply a measured movement of the teeth; slowly forcing them to change position from here they are now to where it is the best position for them. Hygiene is a lot simpler with these braces since they are practical and easy to remove and to put back on for the occasions of brushing or eating. Although a relatively new method, invisalign has already established itself as a great way to tackle orthodontic problems and keep an esthetically perfect look during the treatment itself.
